About Janet Loughrey

I am a freelance horticultural photographer and writer based in Portland, Oregon. I work on both a stock and assignment basis. My work has been reproduced in consumer and trade publications, as well as in calendars, catalogs, trade show displays, posters, greeting cards and postcards.

Stock files include images of perennials, annuals, trees, shrubs, herbs, vegetables and vines. Home gardens, public gardens and nurseries also are well-represented. I take great care that my transparencies are properly labeled with accurate genus, species and variety or cultivar names.

My active involvement with the gardening community helps me to discover new gardens and stay current with the latest trends. I belong to numerous horticulture and professional organizations. The connections and friends I have made in the gardening community over the years are invaluable to my work. Oregon is the third-largest nursery stock producer in the United States. The Willamette Valley has some of the best soil and growing conditions in the country, and many local growers are introducing new plants to home gardeners regionally and nationally. Living in the Pacific Northwest allows me access to many unusual and interesting plants, and lots of beautiful public and private gardens.

My skills as a writer augment my services as a photographer. I can offer a photography and writing package for magazines, books or electronic media, resulting in a more cohesive article or project.

I take all of my photos with a Pentax 6 x 7 cm camera and a Nikon 35 mm system. I use Fuji Velvia film for optimal sharpness and color saturation. I shoot on location utilizing existing light, and using filters, reflectors and diffusors as needed to capture the optimum image.

Clients & Publishing Credits

I work with an extensive number of clients: national magazines and book publishers, regional publications, plant label companies, nursery trade associations and local nurseries. My work also has appeared in numerous national, regional and local publications, including "Better Homes & Gardens," "Garden Design," "Horticulture," "Sunset" and "The Oregonian" newspaper, among others. Awards

In 2001, Janet received two Quill and Trowel Awards, given by the Garden Writer's Association of America (GWAA). The awards were presented at the annual GWAA conference in Orlando, Florida in November.

Quill and Trowel Awards are the Academy Awards of the Garden Communicators world. Entrants submit work that was published in the previous year to be judged in various medium including writing, photography, television, radio and electronic media. Categories within these fields include magazine, newspaper, book, newsletter and video. Entrants are from across the US, Canada and worldwide.
Janet's work was selected in the newspaper category for 'Heavenly Hellebores,' which appeared in the Oregonian Homes and Gardens magazine. She was also selected for the category of magazine cover for an image of Japanese maples that appeared on the cover of Better Homes and Gardens Garden, Deck and Landscape.

In 2002, GWAA changed its name to Garden Writer’s Association (GWA) and restructured its awards program. At the 2002 GWA conference in Seattle, Janet was given an Award of Achievement in the magazine photography category. The article, "Tropical Punch," appeared in Country Living Gardener magazine in October 2001.

My Garden

Because I'm a gardener myself, I see plants with a gardener's eye. I believe this is crucial in capturing the essence and character of each plant on film. The images on this page are from my Portland, Oregon, garden. Being a gardener, and tending to plants on a daily basis, makes me a better plant photographer. I especially love trying new plants as they come on the market, and somehow I manage to find room for them all each year!
